Stop, as you turn,
\noff the side of the road,
\ninto the courtyard, quietly permitted.
\nThe weather changes.
\nPass the windows of the shy house,
\nthrough the kissing gate,
\nover the stone hedge.<\/p>\n
Green fern fronds catch moisture,
\nstems drip.
\nThe damp increases,
\njustifies itself, insists.
\nGrass cloys, shoes soak.
\nThick drizzle, coat weighs,
\na wet thrack.<\/p>\n
Hooded though, shelter, enough.
\nWall rock darkens, lichen swell,
\ngrey, green, gold, and white.
\nThe rab adheres.
\nStones precariously balanced,
\nhard fitted.
\nHerringbone ribbed,
\nrun the fields.<\/p>\n
A lone bull, indolent,
\nsulks the weather.
\nWind switches south,
\nmore rain, swatches.
\nHeavy now, but good,
\nthe wall runs on regardless.
\nFerns bend, grass patterns,
\nswirl circles.<\/p>\n
Over the next sty,
\nhome seen away.
\nSome kind of belonging now.
\nStop atop the rock step,
\ntake the wind in your face.
\nThe rain seeps through,
\nfeel the collar dampen.
\nAlong the stone raised edge,
\nmud, to the farmyard.
\nCows crowd the gate.<\/p>\n
Smile now, seeing
\nsmoke from the chimney.
\nThere is some certainty.
\nTake a second,
\nyou do not need to be dry.
\nNot just yet.<\/p>\n
Taste the salt in the rain,
\nlet the wind buffet you.
\nJust be here,
\nthis moment will provide comfort,
