\nLongships captain, on the starboard bow,
\nwith an eye to the sunset.
\nThe back of my hand blooded on black slab. Sunlit now,
\nas it always was. Fear remained looking down,
\nto be cherished above all.<\/p>\n
We took a photo for two girls.
\nWho didn\u2019t know, and didn\u2019t care, where they were.
\nUnlike me. I knew where I was most of the time,
\nand I cared all of the time.<\/p>\n
High above the sea we watched for hours, as the rain swept in.
\nDown at the beach the gulls, waves, counterpoint.
\nTo risk a pathway sought from memory. The cape
\na good hope, sight lines to the sacred land, to
\nAire point, and Biggles flies again undone.<\/p>\n
At the end of it all, sitting as part of the scene.
\nJust to be men not boys for once.
\n(you could tell by how little beer we drank.)
\nA cave, a chance in the rain. It was here,
\nthat feeling returned, belonging, waiting, expectant.<\/p>\n
No matter how much I\u2019ve tried to shake it off,
\nI\u2019m secured and humbled, in a spiritual stasis.
\nWorship stones, ancient, calling.
\nThe menhir encompasses my lost direction.
\nThe cure stone lies widdershins.
\nSanctuary from a distant land.<\/p>\n
Strong the old watch, white in the grey sky.
\nThick walls shoal back the time, to frame this eternal view.
\nThe old workings, now just picture fodder.
\nMeaning is lost, the dirty hard work and men,
\nused beyond their natural limit.<\/p>\n
Where the shore ended they carried on out.
\nAs the pebbles above their head sang of mortality.
\nTo make the old rounds, time after time, in the eternal rain.
\nRegroup, the local and foreign, older and the wiser.
\nThere is so much here to be remembered, and more to be found.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
