\nJust stroll aimlessly down, past the green grey church.
\nOn the corner, alongside the co-op,
\ntheir faded message boards of last month\u2019s prayers,
\nand tomorrow’s dreams, are uninviting, but apt.
\nThey remain, happily-unhappily alone, like you.
\nThough the buildings themselves were lovely.
\nTo find by chance a new old path,
\ntakes you down through crouched houses.
\nShunned second-home havens.
\nDown a muddy brambled lane.
\nTo the estuary, storm sheltered,
\nwith boathouse woods and briars.
\nAlone along a lamp lit path,
\nto the water\u2019s edge.
\nPromenade to the pub,
\nwhere later friends, talk, and falling
\nwere to prove as easy as the beers.
\nA chance turn, and a climb above,
\nled me back to other people\u2019s rooms,
