It peered over the hill,
\naway from the road,
\na hard line of the horizon.
\nAlways further away than expected,
\nthe rough way up, muddy, unkempt.
\nStill I cannot explain, why, or how,
\nmy heart grew happy in the chance
\nto be a youth again.<\/p>\n
I stood proud of
\nthe sheared stone masses,
\nlayered eon upon eon,
\nto give lie to the myth.
\nHard against the weather,
\nas king, lord over all, I\u00a0surveyed,
\nmy whole world at my feet.<\/p>\n
I\u00a0couldn\u2019t deny that this was
\nnot for my keeping, (yet I have.)
\nSecrets, hidden for searching,
\nand an idle moment, passed,
\nto be sure\u00a0my past was revealed
\nand revisited, at long last.<\/p>\n
A tree, rooted in rock,
\nyounger than my memories,
\nsoft, but breaking stone.
\nHere, revered and reassured,
\nlook to the west, always west.
\nClouds gather, the rain comes.
\nWhile above the forest,
\nin that sheltered isle
\nagain,\u00a0smile, consoled,
\nthat this remains.<\/p>\n
The view is bleak,
\ngrey sky, brown earth,.
\nriven, rank with standing water.
\nPeat is created, corrupted, eroded.
\nMy\u00a0green age resists the pull,
\naway down the\u00a0dank path,
\nmarked for a thousand feet.<\/p>\n
The horizon now has other
\ntales to tell, other places
\nto reclaim, other stories
\nto unfold and wonder.
\nMy history is full of them.<\/p>\n
Downhill to the woods, dark,
\nsentient and holy, seeking the
\nilluminated manuscript paths.
\nAnother tale from other times,
\ntold often, but still absolving.
\nOut of the light, into my present,
\nwithout regret.<\/p>\n
