\nan hour alone, hoping for more.
\nEke out the last of the day,
\nvenerate the time here.
\nDown to the green lane,
\nankle snapping and wet.
\nSun in the distance,
\nlow to the horizon,
\nred behind cloud.<\/p>\n
Stop now, alone.
\nHere is nowhere
\nof consequence,
\nbut the view insists.
\nDown the lane,
\nthe runoff spills,
\naway from sodden fields,
\nand dumb sheep,<\/p>\n
It flows unnamed,
\nand undammed.
\nFollow a short while,
\nlike you,
\nit\u2019s going home.
\nA stone hedge,
\nholds hard against the road,
\nsavaged by rough mechanisation,
\nyet firm, and old.<\/p>\n
Darker now,
\nthe tip of the late sun
\nabove the horizon.
\nWhat is there in this view,
\nwhat stops you in its track?
\nFrom here you see
\nthe church steeple,
\nthe village vague.
\nA few farms, perhaps,
\nthe Barn, Devon sanctuary.<\/p>\n
Fields, hedges, grey, green,
\nunordered, patchwork.
\nRandom intercohesion.
\nSmoke from damp wood
\nburning in a distant hearth,
\ngives instant, pure, joy.<\/p>\n
The sky turns
\nit’s last light darker still.
\nAbove, a buzzard rests
\nday soon to end.
\nDeparts on a wing turn,
\nleaves you alone.
\nThis is what holds you,
\nno one part, all of it.<\/p>\n
The totality of here,
\na moment of unalloyed being
\nin that sense of here, now.
\nThough now could be anytime,
\nanytime drawn down
\nfrom the past thirty years.
\nTo have it back, just this instance,
\ncould you ask for more?<\/p>\n
Quietly absorb this,
\nhold it as it holds you.
\nTouch the stone hedge,
